Summer Picnic - July 9, 2005                                           Vivie Young (1962)

On Saturday, 07/09/05, sixty members and guests enjoyed a festive picnic at Central Park in Fremont, California. This event was timed to welcome nine special visitors from Hong Kong - 5 students from the QESOSA Secondary School, (click here for photos and self-introduction letters of students) plus two teachers and Mr. and Mrs. Tsoi Heung Sang. We also had Dr. K. C. Leung who came as our guest of honor. Dr. Leung was an English teacher at QES in the early '60s.

Louisa, our resourceful and indefatigable coordinator of the students' summer visit, introduced the volunteers and host families. (Click here for a report on other activities of the students during their Bay Area visit)  Then Tsoi Heung Sang introduced each of the teachers and students, and told us about the Youth Environmental Summit in Oregon where they had just spent the previous week. The food was plentiful and sumptuous - salmon, chicken wings, pork chops, sausages, chicken satay, yams, corn, garlic bread, potato salad, green salad, fruit, and various snacks. We celebrated the July birthdays with a delicious cake and won prizes at the lucky draw.

We thank Philip and May Tai for hauling all those tables and chairs to the park for our use, plus loaning us two BBQ grills - one of them brand-new, bought just the day before! Philip also designed the very ingenious picnic flyer which generated much interest, and provided the prizes for the lucky draw.
Katherine Wong marinated the pork chops while Bernice Ng provided chicken wings and corn-on-the-cob. Our BBQ chefs were Larry Ho (Bernice's husband) and Louie Cheng (Beth Pao's husband). Nelson not only provided all the drinks and distributed copies of the most up-to-date membership directory, but was busy as photographer, school song leader and greeted everyone with a personalized nametag, even for our HK visitors who were immensely impressed. Joyce planned the menu, hauled the food and supplies to the park, and made sure everyone had a good time.

We also want to thank everyone for coming to the picnic, and for pitching in to help with set up and clean up. The picnic would not have been a success without you!
