A canal in Amsterdam

Paul Hui (1962) and his wife, Evelyn, visited Amsterdam in May, 2003.  His classmate Emily Hung (Tsang Shun Han, also 1962), who has been an Amsterdammer for more than 20 years, showed them around various cities in the Netherlands.

Emily was a tireless guide.  She made our stay in Amsterdam last year a most memorable trip. She told me about the Amsterdam Passport which I used to visit all the museums for free except the Ann Frank Haus.  Emily also showed us some off-the-tourist-track places like the little Catholic Church next to the Anglican Church.  We were not able to see the inside of the Anglican Church because it was closed.

Emily took us - Evelyn, our friend Chris and me - to Keukenhof to see the tulip exhibition and on our way back she also showed us the towns of Leiden and Haarlem.  The best time to visit Amsterdam is late March through the mid-May to catch the famous Bloemencorso (Flower Parade) at Keukenhof.  It has the most impressive display of tulips produced in the surrounding fields.  I had never seen so many beautiful tulips in one place.  Who would have thought that such beauty was the cause of the “Tulip Mania” in the early 17th century - the first collapse of capitalism?
